It’s not enough to have a diverse workforce. We engage with each other through equity and tap into the power of our differences through inclusion. We are empowered to do our best work, make unique contributions and build purposeful careers. We all have a voice and role to play in cultivating and sustaining an environment where everyone is treated with fairness, dignity and respect. Intention and effort go into delivering programs and creating policies that prioritize DEI in the work environment – whether in the office or virtual – and throughout the talent lifecycle – from recruitment and development to retention and advancement. Together, we are committed to creating conditions of inclusion and equity, where all can achieve their full potential.

Who We Are Defines How We Move Ahead

In today's complex financial world, we must explore each challenge by approaching it from multiple perspectives.

Diversity and inclusion are our differentiating strengths that ensure we continue to look forward.

Nurturing Diverse Talent

Our enduring ambition is to build the best global team—one that is inclusive of differing perspectives, backgrounds and experiences, and represents the increasingly varied markets and clients we serve.

Setting a Market Standard

We stand by our actions. We set goals with specific targets that prioritize diversity and inclusion throughout the talent life cycle, from recruitment and development to retention and advancement. And we speak out on the important issues that affect our employees, and society at large.

  • An empowered employee is an engaged employee. BNY Mellon’s E/BRGs engage our people in driving culture change across business lines and regions.
    • These groups provide opportunities to share, network, collaborate on the basis of shared interests, common attributes and cultural heritage. They offer mentoring and reverse mentoring programs; professional development workshops; and leadership skill-building and cross-border teaming, volunteering and pro bono opportunities, among other activities that can raise an employee’s visibility, enhance professional capability and capacity, and build trusted working relationships with global colleagues, clients and partners.
    • In 2020, E/BRG leaders and volunteers came together to launch the first Cross-E/BRG Mentoring Program, aimed at driving greater connectivity and collaboration through intersectionality of differences. The pilot cohort included 60 mentors and mentee pairs from each of BNY Mellon’s six E/BRGs with global representation. Plans are underway to scale up participation in 2021 and the near-term goal is to grow the initiative into a BNY Mellon enterprise mentoring program.
    • E/BRG membership continues to grow year-over-year. With nearly 400 volunteer leaders and 12,000 unique members, one in four BNY Mellon employees are a member of an E/BRG.
  • When we intentionally include and nurture diversity at all levels and across all businesses, we are supporting a culture where each of us can feel heard and valued. And when people feel truly appreciated, they are engaged, which leads to higher rates of job satisfaction, retention, productivity and performance.
    • To strengthen our inclusive environment, we are delivering enhanced training programs and providing forums to educate and create awareness, such as our Courageous Inclusion Dialogues and Lecture Series.
    • Additionally, our most senior leaders participate in unconscious bias and inclusive leadership training and workshops to enable them to be more successful leaders of diverse, high-performing teams.
  •  Resources : We believe inclusion to be an essential leadership competency. To support DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) skill-building for all of our people, we are rolling out new resources and curricula in 1Q 2021, including:
    • Strength in Diversity: Consciously Unbiased Decision Making,” a 4-part course on how to mitigate the impact of implicit bias on workplace decisions and actions, and
    • Passion for Excellence: Inclusion Powers Our Success,” a 6-part course on understanding different lived experiences and leveraging authenticity and differences to competitively differentiate, drive high performance and effectively lead change.
  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Academy : a new learning platform that will serve up curated resources to enable employees to foster continuous learning and enable employees to differentiate their skills and capabilities as inclusive leaders and culture change agents.
    • The DEI Academy will provide best practice guides, behavior-based toolkits, team-building and courageous conversation resources, the latest research and evidence-based insights, and SME videos and podcasts.
  •  Training : In our Pershing division, a pilot training program is underway to address needs identified through focus groups with managers.
    • These discussions revealed ways to improve utilization and scale what’s working as well as a development opportunity for managers to improve intentional inclusion of Black and Latinx employees and to design a skill-building session that leveraged employee listening and feedback platforms, such as annual employment engagement surveys and pulse surveys.
    • A series of three workshops, delivered over six months, to 100 select Pershing managers will center on the themes of 1) Seeing the World Through Your Diverse Employees’ Eyes, 2) Understanding, Accepting and Mitigating Fears, Uncertainty and Biases, and 3) Implementing Effective and Authentic Managerial Advocacy.
  • Our India region’s popular DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) Week continues to engage hundreds of employees. In 2020, a robust four-day program culminated in the Diwali celebration with E/BRG India chapters collaborating to deliver thought leadership and interactive learning covering topics intersectionality of generation and LGBT+ identities, women championing women in the workplace, work/life integration, personal brand and resilience during difficult times.
    • This is Me,” a storytelling campaign launched with external partner, Community Business, amplified employees’ lived experiences to help destigmatize disability and mental health in the workplace.
